Buzz Aldrin Recovering After Medical Emergency During Tour of South Pole

On Friday, former astronaut Buzz Aldrin—the second man to walk on the moon—was recovering in a New Zealand hospital after he was evacuated from an expedition to the South Pole due to medical reasons.

According to The Associated Press, the 86-year-old Aldrin was visiting Antarctica with the White Desert tour company when he reportedly developed fluid in his lungs. He was flown from McMurdo Station in Antarctica to Christchurch, New Zealand, and was responding well to antibiotics.

Aldrin will remain in the hospital overnight for observation, but he is good spirits. The astronaut’s official Twitter account shared an image of him in the hospital and a statement about the incident:

The expedition to the South Pole was part of an Antarctica sightseeing tour. Before the trip began, Aldrin sent out a tweet sharing his excitement to visit the continent:

The group had departed from Cape Town, South Africa, Tuesday, but the trip was cut short when doctors determined a medical evacuation was necessary due to Aldrin’s deteriorating condition. His manager, Christina Korp, said the evacuation was “grueling.”

To help get Aldrin to safety, the National Science Foundation provided the air lift via a ski-equipped LC-130 cargo plane from the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station to McMurdo, and then to the New Zealand hospital.

“We wish Buzz a speedy recovery,” the White Desert tour company said in a statement.
