Carnival Cruise Lines today signed a Memorandum of Agreement for construction of two new 180,000 gross-registered-ton cruise ships, the largest in our fleet! Scheduled for delivery in 2020 and 2022, these ships will feature many new innovative features and spaces for guests to enjoy due to their larger size. Also, they will be the first cruise ships based in North America to be powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), the world’s cleanest burning fossil fuel, as part of our exclusive “green cruising” initiative.
The two ships, with an approximate passenger capacity of 5,200 based on double occupancy, will be constructed by Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku at the company’s Turku, Finland shipyard. This represents our return to shipbuilding in Finland for the first time in 12 years! 12 of our current ships were constructed in Finland (including our eight Fantasy-class ships and four Spirit-class ships).
