Though much of the news from Disney’s Hollywood Studios in recent months has been in regards to the much-anticipated Star Wars Land, which is confirmed to be opening in 2019, this park has bigger plans for its rebirth than just one new land coming in two years. This summer, Disney will be introducing two new limited time attractions, and looking forward to the years ahead, yet another new land will be constructed. And as you might have noticed, all of these developments have one thing in common: they are all based on the world of Pixar!
1. The Music of Pixar LIVE! A Symphony of Characters to debut this summer
Starting today, Disney’s Hollywood Studios is playing host to an all new entertainment option: The Music of Pixar LIVE! A Symphony of Characters. This limited-time concert event will showcase memorable music from classic Pixar Animation Studios films, including Up, Cars, Toy Story, and Finding Nemo. However, this won’t just be your run of the mill show, as Disney is actually going to have a live orchestra performing the music, instead of a backing track (like what is used for every other show at Disney parks) and will also incorporate actual Pixar characters into the performance, including Woody, Jessie, Mike, Sully, the Incredibles and more.
Interestingly, this new show will not be sticking around for long, as Disney has confirmed that the plan is to only offer this show temporarily through the summer season, which means it will likely close sometime in September. This new show is being performed three times nightly at the Theater of the Stars while Beauty and the Beast runs on a modified schedule to accommodate this new show.
2. Temporary Cars 3 meet and greet coming this summer as well
And speaking of temporary attractions, fans of Pixar’s Cars films will be happy to hear that new character Cruz Ramirez from the upcoming Cars 3 movie will be appearing for meet-and-greets at Disney’s Hollywood Studios beginning sometime later this summer (presumably around the time this film comes out).
No date or location has been announced for this new experience, but we can’t help but feel like this new addition seems almost like a bit of a throwback, as Disney’s Hollywood Studios used to be home to a Lughtning McQueen and Tow Mater character experience before the Streets of America were closed off and demolished.
3. Toy Story Land opening date to be announced soon
Though we’ve been looking primarily towards attractions that will debut this summer at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, earlier this week Bob Chapek, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts took some time out to talk about Toy Story Land, which was announced back in 2015, but hasn’t really been discussed since then. According to Chapek, work on this new land is progressing quickly and the firm release date for Toy Story Land will actually be announced at this year’s D23 Expo in just a few weeks. And while that may seem sudden, it’s worth remembering that construction on this new 11 acre land began in April 2016, and the anchor for this new land will be the Toy Story Midway Mania attraction, which of course already exists (but will be getting a new entrance)
Though there’s no way to know for sure, we’d imagine that the release date for Toy Story Land will be quite soon since Disney has committed to announcing it this summer. It might be too much to hope for a late 2017 opening for this new land, but it looks increasingly likely that this new land will open up some time in 2018, a full year before the ambitious Star Wars Land is scheduled to open.

Hopefully this announcement also includes some new details about Toy Story Land as well, as Disney has been fairly sparing with information about the two new attractions that will be a part of this new area thus far. You can read everything we know so far about what to expect from Toy Story Land here.
While Star Wars is certainly a pop culture force, it seems good that Disney isn’t trying to turn all of Disney’s Hollywood Studios into Star Wars Land, instead opting to incorporate new and temporary attractions based on the various worlds of Pixar films to help bring some much-needed diversity to this park. How do you feel about the temporary Pixar attractions coming this summer to this park? Will you be checking them out? And do you think Toy Story Land will be a hit?
