The Walt Disney Parks revolutionized the industry in 1999 when it introduced the original FastPass system. It has quickly been copied in one way or another at most major theme parks in the United States including the Universal Studios Parks and the Six Flags Parks.
In 2008, in keeping up with the times and in conjunction with the introduction of MagicBands, the Walt Disney World Resort modified their system and introduced the FastPass+ Reservation System. With the FastPass+ Reservation System, you can reserve times for your favorite attractions, before you ever leave on your Magical Vacation, saving yourself a possible long wait once you get to the parks! You can reserve these FastPasses using the My Disney Experience web site or the My Disney Experience (MDE) App, an excellent FREE tool to have on your smartphone. FastPasses reserved prior to your Magical vacation will be saved on your MagicBand (or chip enabled park ticket) ready for use when you get to the parks.
What? You’ve never used the FastPass+ Reservation System or has it been a long time and you’re a little rusty? No worries! Follow our advice and instructions below and you’ll be on your way in no time!
1. Create a My Disney Experience Account
If you already have an account on the Disney World site, then login and click on “My Disney Experience” in the upper right hand of the menu bar. If you’ve never had an account before, click on “Sign In or Create an Account” and create your new account, the click on “My Disney Experience” in the upper right hand of the menu bar.
From this My Disney Experience section, you can view upcoming reservation, tickets, make dining reservations (watch for our coming article) and most importantly for now, make your FastPass + reservations. After logging in to My Disney Experience, the system will take you step by step in adding your On Site Walt Disney World reservation & tickets or just tickets if you are staying off site. It will then ask you about, and add any family and friends attending with you to your account, enabling you to make FastPass+ & Dining reservations for your entire party.
Remember, you will be able to select up to 3 FastPass+ Reservations per person, per day at one of the 4 Walt Disney World Resort parks. Our recommendation is always to make these reservations for as early in the day as possible. Once you have used all 3, you will be allowed by the system to make additional FastPass+ reservations, 1 at a time (if slots still available) for the remainder of the day via the My Disney Experience App.
2. Download the My Disney Experience app for your Smart Phone
The My Disney Experience App is your best solution for having all of your Resort Reservations, Tickets, FastPass+ Reservations, Dining Reservations and other reminders at your finger tips, all day, every day before and during your Magical vacation. It is available for FREE from the iTunes and Android app stores and allows you to make, view and alter your dining and FastPass+ Reservations at any time! (If you don’t have the app installed on your Smart Phone you can always use one of the walk up FastPass+ kiosks ( see photo below) in the park to make or modify your FastPass+ Reservations too.) The My Disney Experience App also provides you with other useful tools such as park maps, walking directions, current wait times, and a whole lot more.
If for any reason you can’t install the My Disney Experience App on your phone, you can also use the web based verion (www.mydisneyexperience.com) on your home computer. You can also print a daily itinerary from the Walt Disney World website if you like having a hard-copy at your disposal.

3. Calculate your designated date and mark it on your calendar!
The Fastpass+ reservation system open daily at 7:00 AM Eastern Time.
If you are staying at the Walt Disney World Resort, you may start making your FastPass+ reservation exactly 60 days prior to your arrival for up to 10 days of your stay.
If you are staying off-site, you may begin making your FastPass+ reservations exactly 30 days prior to your arrival on day-by-day basis.
(As you can see, there ARE benefits to staying on-site at the Walt Disney World Resort. It does give you an additional 30 days to make your FastPass+ reservations ahead of those not staying on-site, allowing you a better chance of getting on the attractions you want.
4. Make your selections
Not all attractions at the parks are available on the FastPass+ system. Disney has chosen what they believe to be a selection of the most popular attractions that guests desire. The Magic Kingdom, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Parks have a straight forward list to pick your 3 selections from. Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios both have a 2 tiered system whereby you will choose 1 Attraction from Tier 1 (The more popular attractions) and 2 Attractions from Tier 2 (Popular but not always the most sought after)
When making your FastPass+ Reservations, there are a number of things you should keep in mind.
A. What are the truly “Must See” attractions for your family?
B. Which attractions typically have a longer wait line and will therefore be beneficial to have a FastPass+ Reservation for?
DWCT Advice #1 – Always make your FastPass+ Reservations for as early in the day as possible. Once you have used all 3, you will be allowed by the system to make additional FastPass+ reservations, 1 at a time (if slots are still available) for the remainder of the day, so the earlier you use up your original 3, the more time you have to get additional FastPasses for the rest of the day.
DWCT Advice #2 – Based on that piece of advice, we also recommend not using your FastPass+ Reservations for large indoor shows, parades, or fireworks. Shows have a large capacity and it is extremely rare to not be able to be seated. Parades and fireworks have an unlimited amount of viewing locations throughout the parks. If one location seems crowded, just walk to a less crowded location.
DWCT Advice #3 – Arrive at the parks early before the crowds get to large. The smaller the crowds, the shorter the lines, so don’t be a sleepy head and get there early to enjoy shorter lines on your non-FastPass+ attractions and make the most of your Magical Vacation!
DWCT Advice #4 – Guests with small children may be tempted to use their FastPass+ Reservations to get their children through the Character Meet lines faster. Unless there is one specific Character that is an absolute must, we recommend against this. Many of the Characters come and go though out the day and you can randomly find many of them with short lines for your children to meet and get their autograph books (look for our article on autograph books and what you can have Characters sign) signed. We also recommend you look for areas where more than one Character is in the same area such as Pete’s Silly Sideshow in Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland, Disney Friends in Magic Kingdom Town Square, Kylo Ren, Chewbacca and the Jawas at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Launch Bay.
DWCT Advice #5 – Do some quick research and book a Character Dining Experience with your child’s favorite characters rather than using a FastPass+ Reservation. You can ask your Destinations with Character Travel agent for advice on which characters are at which meals, and help booking that Character Dining Reservation!
DWCT Advice #6 – Get the attractions most important to you and modify the times if needed after the FastPass+ Reservations are made. After you’ve made your reservations, at any time you can click on one of them in the My Disney Experience App and select modify to see if a better time option is available for you. Also, if the attraction you want is now longer available, select your second best choice and continue to check daily to see if you can modify. Guests change their minds constantly regarding which attractions they want to reserve, so you never know when a time slot may open for an attraction you really want!
Following are the available selections for FastPass+ Reservations at each of the Walt Disney World Resort Parks.
Remember, you may make up to 3 reservations per person, per day, at one of the Walt Disney World Resort Parks, after which you may select additional Fastpass+ Reservation 1 at a time (as available) until the end of the day.
