Important Changes are Coming to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party This Year

It’s hard to believe, but the first Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party kicks off in less than two weeks (thanks to an off-site Night of Joy) and will run for an unprecidented 29 nights this fall, the longest in the event’s history! In order to get you ready for this exciting new event, here are some things you must know before you head to the Magic Kingdom for this amazing annual event.

1.  Costumes are OK for 2016

Earlier this year it was confirmed that the strict costume ban at Walt Disney World that was announced in 2015 will be eased during this year’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. The only caveat is that guests ages 14 and older are strongly discouraged from wearing layered costumes or costume props that surround the entire body as they may be subject to additional security screening. So, basically, if you have an elaborate ballgown or Jedi-inspired robes, you should think about picking a different outfit.

In addition, it’s worth remembering that the ban on all props that resemble weapons will continue to be enforced during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. So even though you can bust out your Fedora this year and attend this event dressed as Dr. Indiana Jones, you’ll need to leave your whip and pistol behind in order to comply with the rules.

2. The event lineup will essentially be the same

Even though last year saw the debut of a new show at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and the year before saw an expansion of character experiences around the park during this event (as well as the introduction of several upcharge experiences inside the event), the 2016 edition of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is basically a carbon copy of 2015’s event, and won’t bring any substantially new experiences to the event.

3. The schedule will change depending on the night

Preliminary times (always subject to change) have been revealed for this year’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, and if you’re trying to get a jump on your plans for the evening, here’s what you need to know:

Both Celebrate the Magic as well as Happy HalloWishes fireworks will be performed nightly during this event at 10:00PM and 10:15PM, respectively. In addition, The Cadaver Dans will be in Frontierland on every party night, at the following times:

  • 7:15 PM
  • 8:00 PM
  • 9:15 PM
  • 9:55 PM
  • 10:50 PM

However, though the above times won’t change, the rest of the entertainment lineup will fluctuate depending on the date. In September, when Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party closes between 12:00AM and 1:00AM, Mickey’s Boo-To-You Halloween Parade will creep its way down Main Street at 8:30 PM and then again at 11:15 PM. However, once October begins and the extended hours for this event kick in as crowds begin to show up, the parade times will be slightly earlier at 8:15 PM and 11:15 PM.

The Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular will also have a variable schedule this year that will fluctuate depending on the date (and anticipated crowd levels). Here’s the current times for this show:

  • Sept. 2 – 13, 2016 – 9:15 PM, 10:40 PM, 12:00 AM
  • Sept. 16 – 30, 2016 – 8:00 PM, 9:15 PM, 10:40 PM, 12:00 AM
  • October 2016 (the whole month) – 7:45 PM, 9:15 PM, 10:40 PM., 12:00 AM
Of course, times are subject to change and considering the length of this year’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, we wouldn’t be surprised if Disney makes a few tweaks here and there to the schedule. However, in years past when this has happened, it has always been to add, never subtract shows, so you can safely use the above times as a guide if you are trying to plan out your evening.

4. There will be plenty of new merchandise available

Of course, as always, there will be plenty of fun limited edition and limited release items for guests to purchase at this year’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Guests looking to get their shop on at this event will find masquerade-themed limited edition pin sets, a limited edition retail MagicBand with an edition size of 3,000, and some limited release t-shirt designs, including one that is specifically for annual passholders. These limited edition and release items can be found at the Emporium and Box Office Gifts on Main Street, U.S.A. as well as at Mickey’s Star Trader in Tomorrowland.

5. Prices are up, and discount days are almost exclusively available in September

If you have not yet purchased your tickets for this year’s edition of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, you may be dismayed to learn that the cost of admission has gone up substantially since last year, with prices for most event nights rising a whopping 15-30% year to year (here’s last year’s prices for comparison). Here’s the full (non-discounted) price breakdown for 2016’s event:

October 31– $105.00 plus tax (age 10+), $100.00 plus tax (age 3-9)

As has been the case in the past, the park will offer special discounts to annual passholders as well as Disney Vacation Club Members on select dates, which you can check out here, but sadly, after the first week in October, there aren’t any discount days available for these special groups. Still, if you don’t mind going in September, average savings is between $10-$20, so it is worth checking out if you can take advantage of these discounts (or know someone you can, as passholders and DVC members are allowed to purchase tickets for non-members).
