(11.00 a.m. AEST) — Brisbane bid farewell to Legend of the Seas last month but there is already speculation about Royal Caribbean’s plans for the future of cruising in Queensland.
Adam Armstrong, managing director of Royal Caribbean in Australia, has been pleased with the cruise line’s reception in Queensland to date.
“We’ve had two successful seasons in Brisbane with Legend of the Seas — we love our Brisbane guests and we were so pleased with the way Royal Caribbean has been received here,” he said in an interview. “Sadly, Legend of the Seas has been sold and right now we have no ships capable of being based at Portside [cruise terminal].”
The line’s other larger ships use the temporary berths on the eastern side of the Gateway Bridges when calling in Brisbane. Meanwhile, a new cruise terminal at Luggage Point is on track for completion at the end of 2019, pending final approval from Cabinet and Treasury. This modern terminal at the mouth of the Brisbane River would allow Royal Caribbean to permanently base one of its larger ships in the Queensland capital.
“We know there is a huge appetite for cruising in Queensland and we’d love to homeport one of our ships in Brisbane again one day,” Armstrong said. “We are pleased with the discussions around the new cruise terminal in Brisbane and we will consider calling there if the facility is cost effective and fit for purpose.”
Armstrong also told Cruise Critic: “If a cruise terminal were built on the Gold Coast and it was economical and suitable for use, there could be interest in calling there too.”
In the meantime, Royal Caribbean and sister brand Celebrity Cruises will continue to call at Fisherman’s Island while the company’s smaller 690-passenger Azamara Journey is scheduled to make its maiden call to Portside later this month on March 24. Will one of Australia’s largest cruise ships call Brisbane home in 2019? Watch this space.
