Disney loves Military Families as do all of us here at Destinations with Character Travel Agency.
All of us here at Destinations with Character Travel Agency have great respect for all of our clients with military backgrounds and Thank each and every one of them for their service. We realize it’s not just the enlisted personnel that serve our country, but also their spouses and children who dedicate their lives to supporting those who protect our great country.
While Disney has some awesome discounts for military families, you may not always be aware of the best discounts available for you!
“Shades of Green Resort”
The first choice most military families gravitate to is the Shades of Green Resort on the Walt Disney World property.
Located just southwest of “Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort” (but not on the resort monorail loop) Shades of Green originally opened in December, 1973 as “Disney’s Golf Resort” with 151 rooms. In February, 1986 the resort was expanded with an additional 150 rooms and renamed “The Disney Inn” with a “Snow White Theme” to try and relate to more than just golfers.
In the early 1990s, U.S. Army officials had decided it was time to build a resort in the continental United States. Orlando was the top choice in a market survey of soldiers.
On February 1, 1994, the US Department of Defense leased the resort and the land it sits on with a 100-year lease to use for the MWR program and limited the resort to eligible guests.
In 1996, the resort was purchased outright, for $43 million, due to the high success of the resort, although Disney still owns the land on which the resort sits.
The resort was renamed “Shades of Green” and has run at close to 100% occupancy since its inception. Since becoming “Shades of Green“, the resort has gone through several renovations. It currently includes Ticketing services, 2 pool areas, the Magnolia Spa, a fitness center, and 2 PGA Golf Courses (Disney’s Palm Golf Course & Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course).
For dining experiences, Shades of Green has;
Garden Gallery: Here you’ll find buffet-style favorites with breakfast classics and themed dinners. There’s big value in the daily spreads with dozens of dishes, fresh fruits, salads, house-made pastries, action stations and portions made to order.
Mangino’s: Shades of Green’s full-service restaurant is open, airy and family-friendly. With an old-world charm, big round tables and featured specials that change daily, this is a signature dining experience without the splurge.
Evergreen’s: This warm, family-friendly sports bar is right next to our active Mill Pond Pool area. With gastropub classics, cold beers on tap and a spirited atmosphere, Evergreen’s is a favorite dining destination at Shades of Green.
Express Cafe: Get on your way with fresh pastries, breakfast and lunch sandwiches and portable items that are great for on-the-go. Located on the Lower Level just under the Main Lobby and near the Shades of Green bus stops, Express Café makes it easy to enjoy hand-crafted food, fast.
Java Cafe: Starbucks coffee selections and fresh-made pastries get you up and at ‘em with ease. Located just off the Main Lobby near the Reception Desk, Java Café is a convenient stop before heading out for an early round of golf, mid-day pick-me-up or on your way back from the parks at night.
Bistro To Go: When you’d rather hunker down in your room, but you’re still hungry for a hearty meal and a good deal, this is where you stop. Bistro to Go works both as a take-out option, or delivered to your room for a fee.
Guests staying at Shades of Green may order their park tickets through the Shades of Green Resort or through their local base MWR.
