When people travel to a new destination, seeking out traditional cuisine is almost always on the top of the list of things to do. However, achieving culinary nirvana can often prove difficult in an unfamiliar place. The Seattle Times has an article that can help, with tips on how to eat like a local on the road.
Shivani Vora speaks to co-founder of the New York City-based grocery-delivery service FreshDirect, David McInerney, who spends a significant amount of time traveling and sourcing food for his company.
McInerney says that talking to locals is key.
“The best way to eat like the locals is to talk to the locals, McInerney said. Police officers, construction workers, and security guards are all reliable sources to ask for restaurant recommendations,” he tells the Seattle Times.
He also recommends trying several different restaurants for one meal.
“An enjoyable way to get a flavor of the local food is to spread a single meal out over three or four restaurants—have appetizers in one, entrees in another and desserts at a third,” McInerney says.
You can also just sample a bunch of appetizers.
Starters, compared with main courses, are usually simpler and give travelers a taste of dishes that locals eat; they’re also cheaper.
