There’s no doubt that when experiencing a cruise, the excursions and ports of call are likely at the top of the list of things to do.
Yet these days, cruise ships like Costa Cruises are offering more and more onboard activities. The trick is to winnow down the choices.
So here’s our list of the seven things you must do onboard your next cruise.
Get wet. As long as there have been cruise ships there have been cruise ship pools, but these days onboard swimming has reached new heights thanks to onboard water parks, zero-entry pools and all sorts of water sports, such as the FlowRider.
Get a front-row seat. Between Broadway-class shows at night, movies on the Lido Deck and performances inspired by the world’s top performers, cruise ships are a great place to catch a show. Best of all, these performances are included as part of your cruise ticket.
Get star-struck. It’s easy to forget exactly how starry the night skies are when most of us spend our time either indoors at night or in brightly lit cities, so take advantage of being as far away from shore as possible, and head to the ship’s top deck for some star gazing. Pro tip: Head for the front of the ship so as to avoid an obstructed view.
Get fit. With countless restaurants and bars, not to mention a host of tempting food-related activities (midnight chocoholics buffet, anyone?), most people don’t think of cruise ships as a great place to get fit. But these days, cruise lines are breaking from the old ways, recognizing that today’s cruise passenger is just as interested in fitness as in having that second pina colada, poolside. Fitness centers offer floor-to-ceiling windows with spectacular ocean views. Rock climbing, Pilates, Kinesis walls and swim-against-the-current pools all make working out seem less like work and more like play.
Get smart. While some may take advantage of a vacation to catch up on what the stars wore and who they wore it with, others prefer to use their downtime to expand their knowledge. Whether it’s a fierce trivia game or taking classes in digital photography or a new language, you might just come back after 10 days at sea a little wiser.
Get happy. There’s more to cruising than lying by the pool or shuffleboard on the Lido deck. Between activities to make you smarter and activities to make you fitter, there are countless ways to get happy, starting with a host of amazing spa treatments. Mani-pedis and facials are still around, but now cruise passengers can kick it up a notch with everything from teeth-whitening treatments and Botox to thalassotherapy pools and thermal suites, complete with steam rooms and heated relaxation chairs.
Get a sitter. Parents can make the most of their time at sea, confident that their little (and not so little) ones are well-looked after and entertained at the same time. Between kids clubs such as Costa’s Squok Club and ship-wide activities such as scavenger hunts, karaoke and movies geared to the Disney set, parents and children alike will have the time of their lives.
