Winter Storm Fortis to Cause Travel Headaches in New England, Great Lakes

Meteorologists are warning people in New England and the Great Lakes region about incoming heavy snow and wind being carried into the area by Winter Storm Fortis starting Thursday.

According to, Winter Storm Fortis has caused areas from western Massachusetts to Maine to issue winter storm warnings and forced parts of central and western New York to issue lake-effect snow watches and advisories.

The incoming storm system is “expected to undergo bombogenesis,” which means the weather will rapidly strengthen over a 24-hour period Thursday night into Friday. As a result, snow is expected to come down heavily over much of New England for a 12-18 hour period.

On Thursday, mainly rain is expected along the Interstate 95 corridor from Boston to Washington D.C., so travelers are being warned to exercise caution when hitting the roads throughout the region.

Winter Storm Fortis is then expected to intensify Thursday night, with areas such as New England and the Great Lakes region expecting heavy snow throughout the night and into Friday. The storm will slow down and eventually pass by Friday night.

With large amounts of snow expected throughout the region, travelers are warned of potential delays and cancellations at local airports and train stations, as well as the dangerous nature of roads in the impacted areas.

As for snow estimates, meteorologists expect 6-12 inches of snow in Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Michigan, Ohio and parts of New York, and lighter accumulations along the Interstate 95 corridor.

As for wind, coastal New England and Long Island could see possible gusts as much as 50 miles per hour. The high winds will also result in considerable blowing and drifting snow throughout the Great Lakes region.
